SANTA ANA, Calif. — Homeowners are focusing on sprucing up their outdoor space this year, according to a new quarterly outdoor living trends index.

Among the four options presented, 34% of consumers ranked their outdoor space as the one they would most like to renovate first, although kitchens were a close second at 33%. Bathrooms were ranked first by 23% of respondents, while living rooms were at the top of the list for just 10%.

“It’s clear homeowners are prioritizing their outdoor living spaces more and more,” said Syed Zaidi, CEO of System Pavers, which commissioned the research that will be conducted quarterly to gauge consumer attitudes about outdoor living.

Looking more specifically at the type of outdoor renovation homeowners had in mind, one-third would like to add a firepit, while 22% envision putting in an outdoor kitchen, 20% would replace their concrete with pavers, and 19% are interested in adding a pergola.

“Over the past several years, the firepit has become synonymous with family gatherings and spending time together with loved ones outdoors,” said Joe Kauffman, director of operations, Texas.

For the poll, the company surveyed homeowners 25 and older with an annual income of more than $100,000. Respondents received questions via text message or through the IQ mobile app, which is a paid survey app.
